On Saturday, August 24, 2013, at 5:30 pm Art from Scrap is holding its annual One Night Stand fundraiser.
One Night Stand is an art lovers’ dream. Here’s how it works; professional artists are personally invited to create a 9”x 9” work of art in any medium. All of the art is hung at Gallery 27 at Brooks Institute at 27 East Cota Street.
Surprise!
The element of surprise is crucial to One Night Stand; none of the artwork in the show is labeled. The artist’s name is revealed only after the art is purchased. Each piece is sold for $200.00 on a first-come, first-serve basis with the proceeds benefiting Art From Scrap, a program of Explore Ecology.
The list of artists participating in One Night Stand grows daily. Yoko Ono, Kent Twitchell, Michael McMillen, John Nava, Phoebe Brunner, Thomas Van Stein, Courtland Johnson and many more have already contributed their work for what promises to be the art event of the year in Santa Barbara.
“We’ve had people lining up early to get in every year. I can’t think of any other art event that has a line going around the block.” said Executive Director Cay Sanchez. “One Night Stand is so much fun because no one knows whose work they are buying until after they buy it. It’s also different from other exhibitions because the art is shown for only one night. One Night Stand is a benefit for Art From Scrap and also a great opportunity for people to purchase art by a famous artist for only $200.00.”
Last year’s sold-out event raised $40,000 to support Art From Scrap’s mission of environmental education and art programming.

Josh was born and raised in Santa Barbara, where his passion and curiosity for the environment began and has continued to grow. During his undergraduate studies, Josh pursued this interest at the University of California at Santa Cruz, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies.
Melissa Dodos developed her passion for creative reuse as a mother of four and elementary educator over the past 25 years. She loves to inspire creativity by connecting people with resources and ideas.
Veronica grew up in San Diego and spent four years in San Luis Obispo studying Animal Science at Cal Poly. As an undergrad she learned lots about livestock, agriculture, and wildlife.
Stephanie began her journey as an educator over twenty years ago working as a preschool teacher in Washington state for a cooperative preschool program affiliated with Whatcom Community College. She loved observing the wonder and curiosity of the children and bringing them out into nature to explore the natural world. She continued her love for learning and got her teaching license and then her Montessori certification and worked as an elementary teacher in Tribal, Public, and Montessori schools. She collaborated to create a school garden and her students loved it so much that it became a special place where they could garden, read, explore, play, and it provided a safe sanctuary for students to calm down and reset when they were having difficult moments.
Morgan’s mermaid soul is always seeking adventure—swimming a relay across the Santa Barbara Channel and taking the first photo of a newborn orca off Anacapa Island being standout experiences close to home.
Lindsay Johnson
